Our personal highlights for a perfect stay in Dresden!

To explore our lively neighbourhood (known as Neustadt), we have put together a short tour for you here.

Still have energy left? Then continue on to the Old Town!

Want to explore Dresden by bike? No problem! Here is our bike tour.
(You are welcome to borrow bikes from reception – €10/day)

Our favourite museums – not just for bad weather!

An evening in Dresden’s Neustadt is best enjoyed if you just go with the flow a bit. Simply set off and end up wherever takes your fancy: having a late beer in a bar, in front of a small stage, in a late-night shop, or on a bench with people from all over Europe. That’s exactly what the Neustadt is like at night.

Neustadt is different in the evening and at night compared to during the day

During the day, you can enjoy a lovely stroll through the neighbourhood’s many little shops. There’s plenty to discover: from cool clothes and second-hand goods to organic shops, record shops and headshops – you’ll find it all. Along the way, you’ll constantly come across street art and other forms of art. You just need to keep your eyes peeled.

Things really come to life in the evening when the bars, pubs, restaurants, clubs and late-night shops open. You can start with a meal, settle down in a bar, move on spontaneously to some live music, and even very late (or rather ‘very early’) you’ll still find somewhere that’s still open. Added to this is the big advantage of everything being within easy reach. Much of it is close together, and everything is easily accessible on foot.

1. Just start on Alaunstraße

If you’ve no idea where to start, Alaunstraße is the easiest option. Here, you’ll immediately get a feel for the neighbourhood. Bars, snack bars, small shops, night owls, tour groups, students, people on their way to the next stop – it’s all mixed together.

2. Grab a cheap and tasty bite to eat first, then move on

Here are a few suggestions to get you off to a good start:

Anamit, Asian-Vietnamese

Bautzner Tor, Saxon, Bohemian, down-to-earth

Mumbai Masala, Indian

El Cubanito, Cuban

You don’t need a booking at these restaurants; the service is friendly and the prices are reasonable. You can sit back, relax and ease into the evening.

3. Try out some bars

You’re spoilt for choice. The neighbourhood is packed with bars, one after the other. Here are our tips to get you started:

Hebedas, a student pub that turns into a disco at the weekend

Blue Note, live concerts almost every day

Wohnzimmer, sink into the cosy, stylish furniture

Pinta, the go-to spot for cocktail fans

Trotzdem, a smoky pub for all left-wingers

Mondfisch, a small, down-to-earth pub

These are all classics on Dresden’s pub scene. Not every bar is for everyone, but these are tried-and-tested recommendations to start with. There are plenty more, including lots more great bars. If in doubt, ask the receptionist at our hostel. We’ll be happy to help you plan your own personal tour based on your preferences and wishes.

4. Catch a concert or a small live show

Dresden’s Neustadt district is home to lots of small venues, live music and events that are a bit rawer and more intimate than large-scale events. Check these out:

Ostpol, a wide range of alternative music

Veränderbar, a small club that organises regular events

Blue Note, blues, rock, rockabilly

Groove Station, a wide variety of concerts

Kathys Garage, live music in the beer garden, various parties inside

Scheune, a venue for concerts, parties and all kinds of cultural events

5. Late-night shops and kiosks are the backbone

Especially in summer, a lot of life takes place outdoors. It feels lively, sometimes chaotic, but rarely boring. A classic spot is the corner of Louisenstrasse and Rothenburger Strasse. There are several late-night shops in the area; Kecha and Hol Fix are two of the classics. In the evenings, lots of people hang out on the corner, sitting on the shop windowsills or on the kerb, or just standing around. Depending on the weather and the day of the week, there can be up to a hundred people there.

6. Experience the Kunsthofpassage differently at night

During the day, the Kunsthofpassage is a popular spot for photos. In the evening, the atmosphere changes. It’s quieter, more atmospheric – a bit less of a backdrop and a bit more of a genuine neighbourhood feel. If you’re not just out for a party but want to take a quick breather now and then, this is the place for you.

There are a few restaurants and cafés in the Kunsthofpassage where you can really sit back and relax (Hofcafe or Tiki) and enjoy a good meal (Lila Soße).

7. Clubs, if you fancy a bit more dancing

There are a few places where you can party until the early hours:

Zille, maritime vibe, Neustadt style, laid-back

Downtown, mainstream disco

Koralle, small basement club, electro

Der Lude, late-night party spot until the early hours

It’s always worth checking out Die Scheune, the Groove Station, Kathy’s Garage, Ost-Pol and Hebedas too. Long parties are regularly held there as well.

8. A bite to eat after midnight

Neustadt is the neighbourhood in Dresden where you can still get something to eat late at night. The classic choice is, of course, a döner. Try Marmaris, Dürüm Kebab House or Arzu on Albertplatz. Burgers and chips are also an option: Kantine No. 2, Curry und Co or the Kochbar are good places to go. And if all else fails and everything’s really closed, there’s a 24-hour pizza vending machine!

9. What to do in Dresden Neustadt at night if you prefer a quieter atmosphere

Here are our tips for quiet and relaxed pubs:

Laika, with a cosy, living-room atmosphere

Lloyd’s Café & Bar, a classic coffee house

Barneby, a games bar with a huge selection of board games

The area around Dresden has a lot to offer. Here are our favorites for a day trip:

  • Saxon Switzerland:
National park near Dresden: The Elbe Sandstone Mountains with bizarre sandstone cliffs, high vantage points, and deep gorges. Ideal for hiking, climbing, and experiencing nature.
The classic par excellence: The Bastei Bridge in Rathen
    S1 every 30 min. from Dresden-Neustadt station ~ 45 min ride
  • Meissen - explore the castle, visit the porcelain factory, or simply stroll through the historic medieval old town.
    S1 every 30 min. from Dresden-Neustadt station ~ 30 min ride
  • Moritzburg - castle, lakes, horses: this is a wonderful place to go for a walk and enjoy the backdrop of “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella.”
    Bus 477 every 60 minutes from Dresden-Neustadt station ~ 30 min ride
  • Pillnitz - garden and castle: relax and enjoy the beautiful garden.
From February to April, you can see the unique camellia in bloom! A must for all park and garden fans :)
Tram 6 every 10 min from Bautzner Str/Rothenburger Str., then bus 63 ~ 60 min ride

Saxon Switzerland

Every day, we put together a few tips for events, concerts and parties! These are printed out and displayed next to reception.

There are regular events in our bar, to which you are warmly invited as a hostel guest. These can include game nights, concerts, parties, painting and drawing sessions, pub quizzes, or even chess afternoons. Just check out our current program.

Every Tuesday we host a karaoke party. Just come along if you'd like to sing something yourself, write your requested song on the list on the bar.
Every Wednesday, people from all over the world meet at our hostel for BlaBla Language Exchange. The idea is very simple: you agree on a language and talk to each other. This makes it easy to get to know other people and practise your language skills at the same time.

There are lots of events every day in Dresden. Just check out these calendars:

Cybersax (link only in German) – city magazine, compact overview of concerts and theatre
Rauze (link only in German) – small but excellent selection, ranging from electronic to alternative
